Outside the perimeter of the Kuomintang Army’s defense zone in Jiangcheng, where Commander Xue was stationed, a Kuomintang sentry spotted row after row of Japanese soldiers creeping forward. He realized immediately that they were launching a surprise attack. Just as he was about to fire a warning shot, a hand clamped over his mouth, and a sharp bayonet sliced through his throat. The attackers gently lowered his body, making sure to cause no disturbance. The Japanese had sent scouts ahead to pinpoint the locations of the hidden sentries in preparation for the main force’s sneak attack. Once the main body of troops approached, the scouts took action. After silently eliminating several outposts, a few scouts closed in on another sentry hiding in the tall grass.
