By the time the sun finally dipped below the horizon, the Japanese soldiers were drenched in sweat. They scrambled out of the lower decks; while the deck was still exposed to the sun, it at least benefited from the gentle sea breeze, whereas the compartments below were stifling and unbearable. Once the sun had set, the soldiers, no longer able to endure the heat, flooded the deck, shouting and cheering. Some began drinking sake, singing, and dancing. "Drink! Sing! Dance! Toast yourselves while you can! Tomorrow, you'll be feeding the fish in the navy’s ocean. Have one last night of madness!"
