Inside the General Headquarters in Jinling City, a table several meters long was packed with operations officers and commanders gathered for a meeting. At the head of the table sat Tang Shengzhi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Defense of Jinling. The atmosphere in Jinling was heavy, as if a storm were brewing. Reports of disaster were pouring in from nearly every front, but it was the northern sector—the area around the Tangshan Position—that had descended into total chaos. In an effort to break the Tangshan Defense Line from the front, the Japanese had gone all out, sparing no expense. They threw everything they had into the fray, launching all available artillery and aircraft at once. As the fighting dragged on, many of the defenses set up in Tangshan were simply leveled by the sheer intensity of the bombardment. Countless heroes sacrificed their precious lives on that battlefield to defend Jinling.
