Gaoming Huo’s anti-aircraft towers below had practically ringed the entire city of Jinling, yet the Japanese, emboldened by their overwhelming numbers, insisted on a forced breakthrough. In just over twenty minutes, the Japanese had completed their first wave of bombing runs, but the cost was high: nearly twenty of their fighters and bombers had been shot down by Gaoming Huo’s anti-aircraft fire. The fewer than thirty aircraft remaining could only circle in the periphery, not daring to press the attack.
