After the graduation ceremony, Furuya Rei and Morofushi Hiromitsu were assigned to Public Security and hadn't even been seen since. Date Wataru was in the Special Assault Team, undergoing intensive training every day. The only ones Tamazawa Shuxin ever got to see were Matsuda Jinpei and Hagiwara Kenji from the Mobile Corps. And so, a scene like this played out every day.
"Matsuda Jinpei, Hagiwara Kenji, do you guys have a death wish? Relying on your technical skills and still refusing to wear bomb suits!" Fed up with the sight of them, Tamazawa Shuxin decided to stop looking and went straight back to his post. Lately, there weren't any missions from Glenlivet, and his merit points had maxed out, leaving him delightfully idle. He opened his phone to check for anything interesting and novel. "Several explosion cases have occurred recently in Kumamoto Prefecture, and multiple locations blew up simultaneously..."
Tamazawa Shuxin felt something was off about this. "Simultaneous explosions—given the level of the Bomb Disposal Unit, bombs made with these materials should be manageable. Let me pull up the files and take a look!" Tamazawa Shuxin got up and headed to the records room. "Senior Murashita, could you help me find all the files on the Kumamoto Prefecture bombing cases?" Carrying the documents, Tamazawa Shuxin returned to his seat.
"They activated a signal jammer, but the bombs still went off. Looks like remote control. This modus operandi looks a bit familiar!" He opened his computer and searched through global bombing cases. "Found it. Remote-detonated bombs, but the materials used are different. Plamya..."
Case cracked. Mobile phone remote-controlled bombs were indeed rare in this era. "It seems the perpetrator is connected to Plamya. Let me think, see if I can hack into a phone. It's obviously a homemade bomb; maybe I can check the dark web and black market. I need to prepare in advance, just in case Hagi and Jinpei run into..."
"Run into what? What is little Shuxin thinking about? We've been standing here for ages, and you haven't paid us any attention." Tamazawa Shuxin looked up to see Hagiwara Kenji and Matsuda Jinpei standing right in front of him. "Sorry, I was thinking about the recent bombings. Though I probably shouldn't say this, you guys had better not turn on signal jammers the next time you're on a mission!"
"Why? Give me a reason," Hagiwara Kenji asked Tamazawa Shuxin very seriously, while Matsuda Jinpei also wore an expression of grave urgency. Tamazawa Shuxin recounted his earlier deductions. "That's why you must wear your bomb suits properly on your next mission, and take the Special Assault Team's reconnaissance unit with you. Better safe than sorry." Hagiwara Kenji and Matsuda Jinpei broke out in a cold sweat after hearing this. If things were really as Tamazawa Shuxin described, then the police officers killed by those bombs had been forced into a "voluntary" death—this bomber was utterly unforgivable!
"Little Shuxin, don't worry! Little Jinpei and I are the best partners, we'll be fine!" Hagiwara Kenji patted Tamazawa Shuxin on the shoulder to reassure him. Matsuda Jinpei, however, lowered the corners of his eyes and said through gritted teeth, "I hope this bomber doesn't fall into my hands. Sooner or later, I'll bring the bastard to justice!"
Seeing the two of them like this, Tamazawa Shuxin figured that lingering any longer would put them in danger. He got up from his chair, grabbed his coat, and walked straight out. "Hagi, tell Senior Matsubara I'm stepping out. Thanks!" "Little Shuxin? Where are you going?" Hagiwara Kenji started to chase after him. "Hagi! We have a mission! Let's go!"
Walking down the street, Tamazawa Shuxin muttered to himself, "Japanese dark web and black market transactions... Looks like I'll need Glenlivet for this." Glancing down the commercial street, he finally spotted a coffee shop and walked in. "Welcome! Officer?" Tamazawa Shuxin got straight to the point. "Do you have a private booth available? And I'd like an iced vanilla latte, please." After the waiter served the coffee, Tamazawa Shuxin closed his eyes and switched accounts.
The perspective shifted to a room. Tamazawa Shuxin got up, opened The Organization's intelligence network, and accessed the dark web via a virtual private network. Behind the scenes, he discovered that someone named Ito Kenta had purchased a large quantity of bomb materials and signal converters. At the same time, he logged into the Metropolitan Police Department's system. The clicking sound of the mouse and keyboard rang out continuously. "Found him—Ito Kenta. Let's see if I can trace his IP address!"
Once he knew where Ito Kenta lived, the top priority was to take control of the remote bomb-detonation system on Ito's phone. Tamazawa Shuxin successfully hacked into his phone using his dark web IP. "How stupid, not even bothering to set up a fake IP address. To be defeated by someone like this—tch!" Tamazawa Shuxin transferred system control to his main body's phone; his primary authority now surpassed Ito Kenta's. "Now I just have to wait for Ito Kenta to walk right into the trap!"
Tamazawa Shuxin stretched. Suddenly, his phone buzzed with a message: [Return to Italy immediately / Unsigned]. Looking at the message sent by the Organization's BOSS, Tamazawa Shuxin thought, "Why are they suddenly transferring me to Italy? Judging by the urgency, I won't be coming back anytime soon. Besides, I'd have to keep running dual identities constantly. Looks like this police job is coming to an end, sigh!" Packing up his computer and gazing at the USB drive in front of him, a wave of annoyance washed over him. "Whatever, I'll just leave it here for now!" He locked the USB drive in the cabinet, equipped [Never Stop], and set off on the road to Italy.
On the other side, Tamazawa Shuxin opened his eyes, picked up his phone, tapped into the remote-control system, and checked the location history. "Has he arrived in Tokyo now? Peace Hotel hasn't activated yet..." Tamazawa Shuxin picked up his vanilla latte and took a sip. "Not bad. Looks like this Ito Kenta went to Peace Hotel today! I'll go check it out once I finish this." After finishing his drink, Tamazawa Shuxin got up, left the coffee shop, and sent a report of the situation to Furuya Rei and Morofushi Hiromitsu.
"Matters like this are better handled by Public Security. Even if we crack it, it might still draw Plamya's attention. This needs to be dealt with seriously!"
Inside the Peace Hotel in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, Tamazawa Shuxin changed into sportswear and walked in. "Excuse me, miss, have you seen a tired-looking middle-aged man wearing round-rimmed glasses?" As soon as Tamazawa Shuxin finished speaking, he quietly flashed his police badge to the receptionist, who wrote down "Room 2011, 20th Floor" in the ledger.
"Sorry, the hotel has regulations against disclosing customer information!" Tamazawa Shuxin had to fake a look of failure, then handed over his ID. "Then please book me a room." Tamazawa Shuxin pointed randomly at the ledger, hitting the exact room number the receptionist had just written down. The receptionist was sharp too. "Room 2012, 20th floor. Enjoy your stay!"
Tamazawa Shuxin wasn't in a hurry. Instead, he turned around, left the hotel, and chose to return to the Metropolitan Police Department. After all, without concrete evidence, he couldn't arrest Ito Kenta as a suspect right away, but Public Security could bend the rules. Glenlivet was currently sleeping on a plane, so he still had time.
As soon as he returned to the HQ, he saw Hagiwara Kenji and Matsuda Jinpei walking back in their bomb suits. "Hagi, Jinpei, come over here for a second!" Matsuda Jinpei took off his sunglasses, exchanged a glance with Hagiwara Kenji, and walked over to Tamazawa Shuxin together. But all they saw was the burning red glow in Tamazawa Shuxin's eyes devoid of its usual brightness, replaced by a bewitching violence and cold detachment, with even the corners of his eyes carrying a freezing chill. "Hey, what are you getting so angry about, Shuxin?" Matsuda Jinpei was very displeased with Tamazawa Shuxin's current demeanor, but Hagiwara Kenji sensed that something was wrong.
"Little Shuxin, did you find that bomber? And you think little Jinpei and I are going to fall into his hands because of it, right?" Tamazawa Shuxin didn't speak; he just stared at the two of them with an icy gaze, utterly unable to let it go. "Are you kidding me?! The two of you actually managed to fall into the hands of scum like that!"
Matsuda Jinpei and Hagiwara Kenji thought of the Kumamoto Prefecture bombing. "Shuxin, since it hasn't happened yet, just spell it out! Who is it that takes me and Hagi down?" Matsuda Jinpei couldn't stand Tamazawa Shuxin's icy, violent, and unfamiliar gaze. Tamazawa Shuxin lowered his eyelids.
"I've already sent the evidence to Public Security. Tomorrow on the 20th floor of the Peace Hotel, there will be a bomb. Don't turn on your signal jammers—it's useless, the culprit is using a mobile phone for remote control. Both of you must wear your bomb suits properly. I'll catch this scum with my own hands!" Finished speaking, Tamazawa Shuxin walked past Matsuda Jinpei and Hagiwara Kenji, ignoring their attempts to speak. "Hagi, that guy Shuxin is still hiding something from us, right?"
"Little Jinpei, little Shuxin will tell us after it's all over. What we need to do is disarm the bomb." Matsuda Jinpei didn't speak, let out a hum, and put his sunglasses back on. "Hagi, let's go. Time for training!"
Back at the Tamazawa residence, Tamazawa Shuxin wrote his resignation letter, slipped it into his pocket, and set off for the Peace Hotel. Passing by a convenience store, he suddenly caught sight of a parked Porsche on the side of the road with the license plate 356A. "Whatever relates to the Organization is Glenlivet's problem; what does it have to do with Tamazawa Shuxin?!" Thinking this, Tamazawa Shuxin looked away from the Porsche. Just as he walked up to the convenience store, Gin stepped out. Tamazawa Shuxin ignored him and walked straight past.
However, Gin's gaze remained fixed on him. Tamazawa Shuxin didn't look back, gradually disappearing from Gin's line of sight. "Boss, what is it?" Gin didn't speak, staring with a fierce expression in the direction Tamazawa Shuxin had left, before letting out a sneer and getting back into the car.
Arriving at the Peace Hotel, Tamazawa Shuxin didn't let this little interlude weigh on his mind. Just as he was about to close the elevator doors, "Wait, please!" Tamazawa Shuxin pressed the open button, and a tired-looking middle-aged man wearing round-rimmed glasses appeared before him. "Hh, hhf, thanks!" Tamazawa Shuxin didn't reply, nor did the man say anything further. When the two of them reached the doors of rooms 2011 and 2012, Tamazawa Shuxin confirmed that this man was indeed Ito Kenta. Without pausing, he went straight into his room, turned on the listening device, and called Matsuda Jinpei.
"Hello! What is it?" "Don't speak, just listen!" Following that, Ito Kenta's entire bombing plan was overheard by the three of them. Tamazawa Shuxin hung up the phone directly, ignoring Matsuda Jinpei's questions.
At the same time, *knock, knock, knock*. "Who could it be at a time like this?" Tamazawa Shuxin wondered suspiciously. He crept over and peered through the peephole to see Gin and Vodka standing outside the door. Tamazawa Shuxin made no move, and Gin didn't force his way through. After a short while, they left, and Tamazawa Shuxin couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief.
"What in the world is going on here?! When on earth did I ever have a connection to Gin? There are no such memories either. Adopted from an American orphanage at ten, adoptive parents passed away at twelve, grew up on the inheritance, and then I transmigrated right after graduating from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Medicine. Wait, what about my memories before age ten? Don't tell me I met Gin before I was ten!"
When Tamazawa Shuxin tried to recall his memories before age ten, it was a complete blank. Moreover, the original host in those memories had always had a passion for mathematics, yet ended up majoring in medicine. Tamazawa Shuxin reined in his thoughts; catching Ito Kenta was the primary task right now. Glenlivet had missions to execute in Italy, and he really didn't want to run dual accounts, so he had to make it quick...
The next day, listening to the activity coming through the wiretap, Tamazawa Shuxin heard Ito Kenta leave the room. Hearing the sound of Ito Kenta stepping into the elevator, Tamazawa Shuxin walked out of his room and checked the tracker for Ito Kenta's location. Ito Kenta was wandering around the vicinity of the Peace Hotel. Tamazawa Shuxin opened the remote bomb-control system on his phone, which showed that the bomb was set to trigger at noon. Standing in front of the decorative cabinet by the 20th-floor elevator alcove, Tamazawa Shuxin gently slid it open, revealing the bomb right in front of him.
"Next, I'll just wait for Jinpei or Hagi to come up." Sitting down in front of the bomb, Tamazawa Shuxin leaned his back against the explosive device and closed his eyes to rest.
As soon as Hagiwara Kenji and a squad of officers came upstairs, they spotted the eccentric person the citizens had reported, leaning against a bomb and sleeping. "Little Shuxin! What are you doing here, get up right now!" Hagiwara Kenji shouted anxiously, running forward to pull Tamazawa Shuxin away. Tamazawa Shuxin opened his eyes, pushed Hagiwara's hand aside, stood up on his own accord, and revealed the bomb to everyone present.
"Hagi, the bomb hidden in the Beika Department Store?" Hagiwara Kenji pulled out a cigarette, smoking as he spoke. "Little Jinpei already took care of it! So now we're disassembling while waiting for the culprit to be caught, right?" Tamazawa Shuxin nodded, simultaneously displaying the phone's operation interface to Hagiwara Kenji. "Little Shuxin! How did you get this?!" Tamazawa Shuxin sighed, glanced at the surrounding teammates, and gave no answer. "Hagi, get ready to disarm the bomb!"
Meanwhile, Date Wataru led a team of the Special Assault Team near the Peace Hotel. "Based on the location Shuxin gave us, the culprit is somewhere nearby. Memorize the culprit's description, find a vantage point to observe the Peace Hotel—the culprit is very likely there—and secure the surrounding area. Don't let the culprit escape! Disband!" After dismissing them, Date Wataru stayed put, pondering the culprit's mindset. "The most dangerous place is the safest place!" Just as Date Wataru was about to head toward the crowd at the hotel entrance, "Squad Leader, you hold down the surrounding patrol; Hiro and I will go. Shuxin already gave us the description!"
Within the crowd, Ito Kenta looked at the police cars in front of him. "These cops still don't even know where the real power of the bomb lies! Truly pathetic, only fit to be blown to death!" Ito Kenta muttered quietly to himself. "Time's almost up. Three minutes. Heh heh, game over!" Ito Kenta opened his phone interface. Suddenly, two hands reached in from both sides! "What?!" Morofushi Hiromitsu and Furuya Rei reacted swiftly—one kicked Ito Kenta's phone away, while the other struck his shoulder, quickly subduing him. "Why! How do you cops know?!"
By the time Tamazawa Shuxin and Hagiwara Kenji rushed over, only Ito Kenta was tied up; Furuya Rei and Morofushi Hiromitsu had already vanished. Date Wataru walked over. "Squad Leader, thanks for your hard work!" "Yeah. As long as you guys are safe, I'm wrapping up my team too. The Special Assault Team will take the culprit back!" Bidding farewell to Date Wataru, Tamazawa Shuxin and Hagiwara Kenji finally remembered to go rendezvous with Matsuda Jinpei. "So you two guys actually remember I exist! But good job." Matsuda Jinpei smiled and held out both hands; Tamazawa Shuxin and Hagiwara Kenji exchanged a knowing smile and slapped hands in a high-five.
"Tamazawa, Tamazawa Shuxin, why on earth did you quit being a cop?! Hey, hey!" "Little Jinpei, little Shuxin seems to have a fever again! Little Shuxin, little Shuxin, wake up!" At the same time, Tamazawa Shuxin was in the middle of a fierce gunfight with the mafia. "Damn it, even though swearing is bad, I really want to curse right now! I just want to be a slacker!!!"
