I was disemboweled by thugs and left to die in a sewer.
That day was supposed to be the day my boyfriend proposed to me, yet he placed a two-hundred-million-dollar diamond ring on the finger of my foster sister instead.
It was only then that I realized the true identity of the man of unparalleled distinction standing before me. He was none other than Fu Hanyi, the CEO of the Fu Group, a man who could turn the tides of international finance with a mere flick of his wrist.
Yet, when we first met, he told me he was a penniless Didi driver suffering from liver disease, relying on imported medicine to stay alive.
To scrape together the money for his medicine, I worked as a courier and food delivery rider by day, acted as a hostess at nightclubs by night, and even sold my own blood multiple times—all just to keep him alive until he could undergo a liver transplant.
But when I excitedly rushed to find him, dressed in my bridal gown and clutching his imported medicine, I discovered that everything had been nothing more than a game played with my sincere heart.
My lips, pale and unable to be hidden even by lipstick, trembled as I endured the mockery and scorn of the crowd while Fu Hanyi professed his deep love for my foster sister. I had become the laughingstock of high society.
The mocking words were unbearable to hear. Not only did Fu Hanyi watch with cold indifference, but he also took the expensive medicine I had bought with my own blood and tossed it onto the ground, pill by pill, with utter contempt. His words were filled with endless apathy.
"A hundred thousand a bottle—it is indeed a sky-high price for a pauper like you. But do you know, Wen Yuan? The factory that produces this medicine belongs to me, Fu Hanyi."
He curled his lips into a devilish, playful sneer.
My heart ached so much I couldn't speak. I didn't understand why he would pretend to be poor just to toy with a Cinderella like me. But before I could even ask, his bodyguards threw me off the cruise ship, where I eventually ran into the murderous thugs.
In the final minutes before my life faded away, I made one last, desperate phone call—instead of dialing the police for help, I called the man to whom I had given my entire heart.
Even though my devotion had been cast to the dogs, deep down, I still held a glimmer of hope for human nature, foolishly wishing he would reach out to help me in my hour of peril.
"Hanyi, save me! Someone is chasing—"
"Wen Yuan, get lost if you know what’s good for you. Otherwise, I will make sure you cannot survive in A City." The man coldly and ruthlessly cut me off.
I froze.
The thugs wanted my life, and he also wanted to ensure I couldn't survive.
And yet, here I was, ridiculously begging him for help!
My heart felt as if it were being shredded. I bit my lip until it bled, my voice trembling and cracking: "Fu Hanyi, why are you doing this to me?"
"Why?" Fu Hanyi asked back with a mocking tone. "Wen Yuan, do you know what the cheapest thing in this world is?"
I said nothing.
The man’s voice was filled with disdain and malice: "It’s the sincere heart of a shameless pauper like you!"
My heart seemed to explode, a massive hole torn through it. Blood surged, and the pain was so intense I forgot to run.
Through the receiver came the voice of my foster sister, Liang Xinwei, sounding oh-so-understanding: "Hanyi, don't be like this to Sister. She was so good to you; she must have been forced to sell her body..."
Sell my body?
Before I could even process the meaning behind her "white lotus" act, Fu Hanyi’s cold, contemptuous voice scraped across my ears like a freezing gale: "A vermin from the very bottom of society doesn't deserve to be called your sister. She’ll dirty your mouth."
I couldn't stop my body from shaking, and finally, I became hysterical: "Fu Hanyi, it was you who hid your identity to toy with my sincerity! Why are you the one standing there so sanctimoniously, trampling on me like a critic?"
Ha.
Fu Hanyi let out a cold laugh, his chilling voice cutting through my eardrums without a shred of emotion: "Wen Yuan, when you’re dead, I’ll tell you at your grave."
He was wishing for my death!
My body shuddered violently; I felt as if I had been suddenly cast into the dead of winter. My phone slipped from my hand, hit the sharp edge of a large rock, and shattered into pieces.
The thug who had caught up to me swung a dagger, its cold light flashing before my eyes.
A sharp pain pierced my abdomen. The thug drove the dagger deep inside. As blood sprayed out, I stared up at the pitch-black sky and slowly collapsed into the sewer.
Tears blurred my vision.
As Fu Hanyi wished, I was about to die.
But he didn't know that the little life I was carrying, stabbed to death by the thug's blade, would die along with me.
I once fantasized about how Fu Hanyi would be wild with joy when he found out I was pregnant with his child. Now I knew it had all just been my own delusion. He held my heart in such contempt; why would he ever cherish the child I, a pauper, was carrying for him?
It was perhaps for the best that the child would join me, its mother, in heaven as a companion.
A trace of solace emerged in my heart, and I offered no resistance to the thug's cruelty. I gazed at the night sky, praying to the heavens with my final moments of consciousness: if there were an afterlife, let me never cross paths with this cold-hearted, ruthless man again.
Yet, when I regained consciousness, my soul was drawn to Fu Hanyi’s side.
Three days had passed since my death.
The newly constructed Fu Group headquarters was holding its ribbon-cutting ceremony.
A Rolls-Royce drove up and stopped at the entrance of the plaza. Bodyguards in black suits ran over, bent down to open the back door, and respectfully invited Fu Hanyi to step out.
The area was already packed with reporters.
When this man of dazzling brilliance stepped out of the car, the surrounding camera flashes instantly transformed into an ocean of light.
In the center of everyone's attention, the kingly aura Fu Hanyi exuded was even more overwhelming, dominating everything around him. His extraordinarily handsome face wore a cold, icy expression that warned others to stay away.
He was a completely different person from the man who had pretended to be poor to toy with me.
Back then, he was always smiling—approachable, like a gentle spring breeze.
In the end, it turned out to be a smile hiding a knife.
Even as a mere soul, I couldn't help but tremble. This man, having reverted to his true self, radiated such a cold, sharp intensity that it was terrifying. Even though I was dead, a shiver of fear still brushed across my heart.
I didn't know why my awakened soul had been brought before him.
The man began to walk toward me.
