"Hurry!" I urged Meng Li, my steps hurried. The ledger papers pressed against my chest, and it felt as if every stroke of greed and every act of sin recorded there were scorching my very flesh. We chose not to fly on our swords, opting instead to run in the most primal way, letting the cold wind slice against our cheeks. The towering gate of the sect grew blurry in the night, yet I felt more clarity than ever before. That place was what we had to protect; it was where justice had to be served. The next day, deafening cheers threatened to lift the roof off the plaza as the sect tournament finals began as scheduled. Meng Li and I stood side by side in the crowd, yet I felt as if we were standing outside of it all. The surroundings were boisterous, but we were unnaturally calm.
