The cold, damp air enveloped me, its biting chill seeming to seep straight into my bones. Meng Li and I had been thrown into the Wu family dungeon by Elder Li’s men. It was dark, humid, and reeked of rot, enough to turn one’s stomach. I struggled to get to my feet, but the ropes binding my body held me fast, leaving me completely immobile. Meng Li was in no better shape; her face was pale and her lips chapped, clear signs she had suffered internal injuries. "Meng Li, are you alright?" I asked anxiously, my heart heavy with guilt and worry.
