Chapter 39

The sea, originally calm and peaceful, was suddenly cloaked in thick, dark clouds. In an instant, a gale whipped up, bringing torrential rain and waves that towered toward the sky. Each successive surge slammed mercilessly against the sails and deck, leaving the entire fishing boat rocking precariously in the storm, on the verge of capsizing at any moment. The fishermen were utterly bewildered, standing on deck with no idea what to do. Amidst the panic, the village chief ordered everyone on deck to take shelter inside the cabin. The experienced village chief said worriedly, "I have been going to sea for decades and have never encountered such a massive storm. Don't be afraid, everyone. If we cannot survive this ordeal today, it is simply heaven's will. Fishermen have always relied on heaven’s grace to earn their living. Let us all pray together for the gods to reveal themselves and help us through this crisis." The little chubby boy hurried over to the side of his small bamboo basket and said, "I'm sorry, little silver snake. I had hoped to bring you on board so you would have food and drink. Instead, a great disaster has descended, and I fear I have dragged you to your death alongside me. If we survive this, we shall be brothers who have faced death together, and I will take good care of you. If we are destined to perish, at least we will have each other's company on the journey to the afterlife. It’s just a pity that life will likely become even harder for my mother."
