Xu Lin had been at the research institute for over two years, dedicating his time entirely to saving lives and treating the wounded. To outsiders, his life seemed deeply fulfilling. Yet, only he knew that deep down, he longed for this war to end as soon as possible. Only then could he leave the institute with peace of mind and go in search of the answers that had plagued him for so long—the ultimate fate of his parents, his family, and his lover. However, the war showed no signs of ending, and Xu Lin could not bring himself to simply walk away from the institute. After all, it was General Shane who had pulled him back from the brink of death and brought him here. Although General Shane's original intention might not have been purely altruistic, it was undeniable that their actions had given him a chance at a new life. Furthermore, his father had taught him since childhood that a drop of kindness received in need should be repaid with a gushing spring. Thus, Xu Lin was caught in a painful struggle. On the one hand, he was grateful to General Shane for saving his life and wanted to help them until victory was achieved; on the other hand, he was desperately eager to leave this place and hunt down those vital answers.
