Chapter 16

2,615 words13 minutes read

Tengshe cried out in pain, the agony of her severed arm was unbearable for any normal person! Tengshe quickly fumbled for a test tube from her embrace, opened it, and drank it down. The moment she swallowed it, the muscles at Tengshe’s severed limb began to contract, and the bleeding stopped.
"Lín Mò," Tengshe shouted furiously, her longsword trembling as she pointed it at Lín Mò!
"What's wrong? Can't take it anymore? Don't rush, we still have plenty of time. Let's play slowly. I'll cut off your limbs one by one. Otherwise, how can I repay your kindness in trying to kill me?" Lín Mò said with a cruel smile.
"That's right, we still have plenty of time. I'll cut you off piece by piece too, and then use you to pay respects to Qinglong," Tengshe said, taking a deep breath!
BOOM
A clash ensued once more. Lín Mò's twin sabers moved like a giant pair of scissors, slashing at Tengshe. The armor on Tengshe's body was torn, and blood flowed from her lower abdomen. Tengshe's longsword stabbed towards Lín Mò's shoulder, but no blood spurted out. Lín Mò's physical strength far surpassed the kinetic weapon in Tengshe's hand!
"Hmph!" Lín Mò snorted coldly, and five throwing knives shot towards Tengshe, simultaneously targeting the wound on her severed arm!
"Ah!" The intense pain struck. Lín Mò seized the opportunity to slash again. The saber scraped sparks off Tengshe's kinetic armor. The immense force drove the saber into Tengshe's armor, and blood sprayed out continuously. Tengshe's face grew paler and paler. She was at the end of her strength. Her power was already a notch below Lín Mò's, and she was a speed-type martial artist. However, her usual speed advantage was completely nullified against Lín Mò. If not for Lín Mò's weapon being inferior and his reluctance to kill Tengshe too easily, she would have died countless times over.
"Alright, we've played enough. It's time for you to die!" Lín Mò said, his eyes flashing. A silver-white figure appeared behind Tengshe, wrapping its arms around her tightly, completely restraining her. It was the metal puppet Lín Mò had on hand!
Lín Mò walked towards Tengshe step by step. He brushed his saber lightly against Tengshe's faceplate. Amidst flickering sparks, Lín Mò swiftly brought his saber down. Tengshe's remaining arm was also severed at the root. Lín Mò's saber finally reached its limit. With a metallic snapping sound, Lín Mò's saber broke into two pieces!
Lín Mò was not flustered. He walked directly to Tengshe's severed hand, pried open her fingers, and took her longsword.
"What a fine sword!" Lín Mò smiled and then, dragging the longsword, walked towards Tengshe. It was then that Tengshe truly felt fear. With both arms gone and blood gushing out, even as a martial artist, she could feel death approaching.
"Lín Mò, you can't kill me. I was sent on a mission by the Dean. If you kill me, the Dean won't let you go. I have a recorder; the Dean will see all of this!" Tengshe cried in terror!
"Sigh, it's always the same routine. First, show off, then pull out the trump card. Is this interesting? If I didn't have some backup, would I have made a move on you?" Lín Mò said, swinging his longsword. Tengshe's legs were severed!
"Ah!" A scream echoed again. Lín Mò glanced back at Baihu and Zhuque, who were still unconscious, then made a shushing gesture at Tengshe. "Don't be so loud. If you wake your teammates, their lives won't be guaranteed! Aren't you a proud captain? Now you have two choices: One, from now on, you cannot make any sound. I will only kill you. If I get my fill, I'll let your teammates live. Two, you shout again, and one of these three will have to die! What will you choose?"
"You're a devil!" Tengshe weakly shouted!
"Incorrect answer!" Lín Mò's longsword pierced Tengshe's abdomen, and her internal organs spilled out from the wound. Tengshe gritted her teeth, refusing to make a sound.
"Sigh, this is getting boring. Fine, since I'm merciful, I'll give you a quick end!" Lín Mò swung his longsword, and Tengshe's head was severed. Tengshe died completely.
Lín Mò looked at Tengshe's remains, his mouth slightly agape. A black void swallowed Tengshe's body. This time, it was much smoother than when he had absorbed Liu Hui. His mental power surged slightly, and he was only one step away from becoming a Level 8 Reserve Puppeteer!
Lín Mò instructed the system to collect everything belonging to Tengshe. He then glanced outside and saw that the zombies were no longer there. He looked at the three unconscious women again and walked over to search them. Finally, he found a document with a yellow cover. Lín Mò had never had a chance to read it before, so he decided to take a look now.
As Lín Mò opened it, his brow furrowed. It was a project brief for something called the Human Limb Regeneration Project! As he read on, Lín Mò's eyes widened unconsciously because the document explicitly mentioned Undead Zombie Blood Research!
"Undead zombies? Could it be Mò Fāng?" Lín Mò continued reading and saw some photographs, all showing scenes in a laboratory. A human-shaped creature covered in wounds was tightly bound to an experimental bed. Its left forearm had been removed, and many doctors were drawing blood and performing dissections on its body.
Because the bound person's face was covered by a mask, Lín Mò couldn't see their face, nor could he confirm if it was Mò Fāng. However, it sent a shiver down his spine. He wondered if, should his identity be exposed, he might suffer the same fate as the person tied up.
"System, how much longer until they wake up?" Lín Mò asked.
"The effects will wear off in about three hours," the system replied.

"Let's go, we'll go back to the mental hospital and see if we can find that undead zombie!" Lín Mò said, casually placing the documents on Baihu before walking out of the defense fortress. Upon exiting, Lín Mò put on Tengshe's kinetic armor.
"This kinetic armor is really cool!" Lín Mò chuckled as he looked at the kinetic armor he was wearing.
He returned to the laboratory and walked inside. He saw the previous zombie standing motionless in a corner, seemingly unperturbed by Lín Mò's arrival.
"Don't worry, haven't you noticed that this zombie rarely attacks you? As a zombie yourself, you can explore here with peace of mind," the system advised.
"My zombie body is really useful," Lín Mò marveled.
"Of course!" the system said proudly.
Lín Mò searched the laboratory for a long time but found no clues. It wasn't until he reached the basement that he saw opened prison cells. As he ventured deeper, he also saw some black blood, which was zombie blood!
"It seems there was a fight here!" Lín Mò touched the blood on the ground. Zombie blood doesn't coagulate!
The further he went, the more bloodstains there were. Finally, he saw claw marks on the wall, made by fingernails!
"Lín Mò, haven't you realized this is the evolutionary path of a zombie!" the system exclaimed.
"Look, from no damage at the beginning to the claw marks now, this is clearly a zombie evolving by devouring its own kind. This zombie is not simple. Remember when I said zombies are creatures that survive purely on instinct? They are only interested in human flesh. But this one is different; it's consciously devouring its own kind to evolve faster," the system continued, seeing Lín Mò's silence.
"So, is it possible this person is Mò Fāng?" Lín Mò asked.
"Highly possible, after all, your friend is not ordinary," the system agreed.
"But where did he go?" Lín Mò looked around in confusion. He had reached the end, yet he still hadn't seen any sign of Mò Fāng.
"Never mind Mò Fāng for now. Since you can't find him, don't leave empty-handed this time. Take the zombie above and absorb it. You'll have a chance to break through to General Level. This place is perfect for it!" the system said.
Lín Mò nodded. Just as he was about to turn back, a beam of light shone on his face. Two or three men in kinetic armor appeared before him. One of them asked, "Human?" As soon as the words were out, Lín Mò shouted, "Watch out behind you!"
At that moment, a slender black shadow clad in kinetic armor appeared behind the three men. It wielded a long-handled battle saber and swept it towards them. The three men's heads flew off like fireworks, only to collide with the ceiling and fall to the ground! The slender figure then grabbed a fallen head and began to devour it voraciously.
"Qinglong?" Lín Mò was stunned. The slender black figure before him was Qinglong, who had previously been infected by a zombie! After finishing the head, Qinglong turned and left without even glancing at Lín Mò.
"Hiss! How could Qinglong be so strong?" Lín Mò wondered. Qinglong's strength had clearly increased after being infected. These three men were not weak; even if not stronger than Tengshe, they were certainly not significantly weaker. Yet they were instantly killed?
"The zombie virus has strengthened her body and increased her power. She was likely an Intermediate Martial Artist before, but now she's almost a High-level Martial Artist, on par with the previous Tengshe. Chase her, kid, you're in luck this time. Whether you sell her corpse or refine her into a puppet, it will enhance your strength!" the system said.
Lín Mò nodded. He wouldn't pass up such a convenient opportunity.
Lín Mò quickly found Qinglong, who was standing motionless in front of a regular room door.
Lín Mò stepped forward and waved his hand in front of her to confirm she was unresponsive. Then he asked, "Can I absorb her directly?"
"No, you must kill her to absorb her!"
Sigh! Lín Mò's longsword flashed and pierced Qinglong's head. As her head was pierced, Qinglong collapsed, no longer responsive. Lín Mò smiled; he didn't plan to absorb Qinglong. He wanted to keep her to refine into a puppet. This was the physical quality of a High-level Martial Artist. Once refined into a puppet, he would have a powerful trump card for the upcoming academy ranking battles.
"System, put her away for now! Remember to strip off the armor," Lín Mò said, preparing to search for that General Level zombie. Lín Mò approached it and killed it using the same method as Qinglong. During this, the zombie still did not resist. Although he absorbed this zombie, Lín Mò did not successfully advance to General Level. He only felt a barrier that required immense power to break through. However, even without advancing, Lín Mò's current strength was far greater than that of an ordinary peak Ghost level cultivator.
He collected the kinetic armor and weapons from the zombie. This time, his haul was immense. He acquired six sets of kinetic armor, over a dozen kinetic weapons, and the corpse of a High-level Martial Artist zombie. This was a fortune!
As Lín Mò walked out of the mental hospital, he saw three women standing at the entrance, looking anxiously in his direction. Upon seeing him emerge, they sighed in relief, then asked in surprise, "Lín Mò, why are you wearing that zombie's kinetic armor? Did you kill it?" Baihu asked incredulously.
"I didn't kill it, another zombie killed it. I was just lucky enough to strip off its armor and weapons!" Lín Mò smiled and scratched the back of his head.
"There are still zombies? Why didn't we notice? As soon as we woke up, we contacted command, and a team happened to be nearby, so they came to support us. Did you see them?" Zhuque asked.

"Yes, they saw me and told me to find zombies and notify them. But when I notified them, I got no response. Did they leave? I thought they had gone," Lín Mò lied to cover up.
"Why did you knock us out earlier?" Xuanwu, who had been silent until now, asked.
"Given Tengshe's state then, if I hadn't knocked you out, would you have stopped her? I'm just a weak puppeteer, and I couldn't possibly deal with the combined assault of three Intermediate Martial Artists and one High-level Martial Artist!" Lín Mò said with a smile.
"Don't try that trick. When we woke up, Tengshe was gone, along with the three supporting Intermediate Martial Artists from the mental hospital. Yet you came out of the mental hospital, even wearing the previous zombie's kinetic armor. Don't you think you're highly suspicious?" Xuanwu raised her hammer and pointed it at Lín Mò.
"You mean I killed them? Do you have any proof?" Lín Mò was exasperated.
"Then do you have proof of your innocence?" Xuanwu asked coldly.
"I am my own proof. If I had this strength, why wouldn't I have acted earlier? Why wait until we were all defeated? Do you have any sense of logic?" Lín Mò sneered.
"That's right. Lín Mò even told me to pull Tengshe back, not to send her to certain death. I don't think he'd have any reason to lie to us!" Zhuque chimed in.
"Fine, if you say so. Then what about Tengshe? She disappeared when we woke up. You were the last one to fight her, and she was planning to kill you. With your strength, escaping from her would have been impossible. Give me a reasonable explanation, or I'll kill you right now!" Xuanwu relentlessly pressed.
"Do you regret not killing them earlier?" the system asked mockingly.
"No. Why regret what's done? Besides, what's the point of regret? Time can't be rewound!" Lín Mò replied calmly.
"When Tengshe fought me, I naturally couldn't win. However, you know my speed. If I could drug you, I could drug her too. After drugging her, I left the defense fortress and entered the mental hospital. If I had stayed in the defense fortress, I would have surely died, so I had to take a gamble. Her strength is greater than yours, so she would wake up earlier than you. Where she went, how would I know!" Lín Mò sneered.
Lín Mò's words made the three women exchange glances. What Lín Mò said did have some logic, but they couldn't imagine that Lín Mò himself was a peak Ghost level zombie! While they were highly suspicious, they couldn't act on their suspicions against Lín Mò. Therefore, they could only accept the fact of Tengshe's disappearance.
"Alright, we've made things clear. If there's nothing else, I'll be going now!" Lín Mò said, not bothering with the three women, and rode his flying sword away.
"Don't say it, your ability to spin a yarn is really impressive!" the system joked after they were far from the mental hospital.
"It's a small matter. It's just, why did they wake up so early?" Lín Mò asked.
"I'm not sure either. Perhaps their bodies are special."
Lín Mò shrugged, accepting the system's explanation without much thought. He was most worried about Mò Fāng. Where on earth was that guy?
At this moment, in a deep cell within the mental hospital, a figure was meditating, with traces of black blood around his mouth. His tightly closed eyes suddenly snapped open. He muttered to himself, "Was that... Old Lín just now?"
